Tasteless Breakfast - The Refugee Crises!

 

750 immigrants left a Libyan port city on June 8. As the Mediterranean became a stage for tragedy on June 14, a billionaire and several businessmen were preparing their adventure in the North Atlantic. The disappearance of the Titanic fans made global headlines for days. Expenses and effort for the search and rescue mission were not an issue.

But when the ship packed with refugees and migrants sank in June, it didn’t make global headlines! Only 104 from 750 survivors have reached the Greek mainland. 82 bodies have been recovered, and the rest are missing, probably swallowed by the sea.

Is it too much to ask, to treat every single human being with the same dignity regardless of nationality, skin colour, and amount of money in the bank account?

BTW: These are the number of humans who have lost their lives - in search and hope for a happy life in dignity - on the sea in recent years according to UNHCR!

Tasteless Breakfast - Homelessness!

Everyone deserves a place of safety and comfort. Homelessness shouldn’t be an issue at all in today's society! I’m always in shock when we travel to different EU cities and see the high number of homeless people, especially in cities like Rome, just a few footsteps away from Vatican City! Seriously? There shouldn’t be one single homeless on the streets of a holy city ruled by the Catholic Church!

The same awful situation is happening in the United Kingdom. Every time we visit London and see homeless people just a few steps away from the Bucking Palace, it surprises me that this is even possible in a country with a Royal family.

And last week, I heard that Prince William is planning to put an end to this inhuman condition. He promised to build housings and remove 300 000 homeless humans (half of it are children) in the next five years. I’m glad to see this important step in the right direction. I only wish it would happen much sooner than in five years! However, every action for humanity should be supported and respected.  

BTW: These are the numbers of homeless people who have lost their lives, according to the Museum of Homelessness in London, in recent years! Who knows what the number will look like in the next five years?

Tasteless Breakfast - HUNGER!

Here's some “food” for thought:

While the majority of us enjoy a tasty breakfast and have the privilege to choose between international breakfasts, a huge number of people suffer from hunger and die daily! This is the harsh reality that most humans, including world leaders and governments, ignore!

While the world wastes about 2.5 billion tons of food every year, a child dies from hunger every 10 seconds!

The United States, China, and India discard more food than any other country in the world: nearly 60 million tons — 120 billion pounds — every year. 

Germany produces the most household food waste in Europe. On average each person produces 75 kilograms of food waste every year. The estimated wasted food is worth $230 billion every year!!!

Poor nutrition and hunger is responsible for the death of 3.1 million children a year. That's nearly half of all deaths in children under the age of 5. The children die because their bodies lack basic nutrients. Globally, 822 million people suffer from undernourishment.

So when food is wasted, all the resources that were used to produce this food - including water, land, energy, labour, and capital - go to waste as well. In addition, the disposal of food loss and waste in landfills, leads to greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change.

So what can individuals do to save lives and protect climate change?

Well, don’t waste food! Simple as that. Every time you want to throw leftovers away, think about those children who die from hunger every 10 seconds!
